One more thing to keep in mind about your stockpile, and possibly most important is space. This will be a decision that is totally up to you. Had the totals been $5.65 and $6.80, I would have bought 6 because it is closer to the original price. Personally, I would buy the 7th item because it is closer to the original total. 86 equals 6.88 that means, you can either buy 6 items for $5.10 or you can buy 7 items for $5.95. Example 2: An item that is normally $5.85 is on sale for $4.85 and you have a coupon for $4.00 off 1, making each item $0.85 (YES THIS HAPPENS!) 5.85 divided by. You can buy 2 items at $3 each because you can get both items for the price of what 1 normally costs (excluding sales tax).

The item is on sale for $4 and you have a $1 off 1 coupon for that item. This is great if you don't really have a specific amount you can spend, or you have very little to spend. The amount depends on two things, how much can you afford to spend and how often can you spend it? Another good option is to figure up the price of an item, then determine how many items you can buy at that price for the same amount as 1 would cost with no discount or coupons. You may opt to set a max budget of $10 a week or $20 per month. Remember there are important keys to remember when you are building your stock pile. Be sure to check with the stores you shop at to see what great policies they have!

Some stores even allow you (like Kroger) to get an item FREE if it rings up wrong. If the item is marked $2.99 but rings up as $3.99, have an associate check it out and they should correct the price at the register. Stores should also match the advertised price of an item. For example: If a gallon of milk is on sale for $2.50, but they are out of stock, and the 1/2 gallon milk is $1.50 ($3.00 for the equivilant of 1 gallon) grab an associate and ask them to "make it right" by changing the price of the half-gallons to $1.25 so it will equal the other price for the same amount.

Take advantage of these policies as often as possible and download the "Savings Star" app too! Other stores have "Make It Right" policies like Kroger. Stores like Target, Walmart and Family Dollar has these policies in place. After that, we had plenty of canned goods stored that we could open, heat and eat.Don't forget, if a store in a near by town is having a sale on an item, many stores have Price Match or Ad Match policies. We grilled and ate all of the meat in our freezer and fed some of our neighbors, too. When the power goes out, first you think about eating everything perishable. We keep an extra propane tank on hand too in case we run out unexpectedly. We have a propane grill with a side burner on it for cooking with pots and pans. Everyone we know was driving around ahead of the storm panicking to get bottled water and foods they could eat without cooking. We got floodwater in the house as did many others, but we sheltered in place and had about a foot of water at the worst point. I have always taken the 'gallon a day per person' guidelines for storing bottled water seriously so we had 14 gallons on hand to get my husband and I through a week if we had to. We don't have a basement so we have always kept our stockpile items up on shelves in a closet in our home office. I wanted to tell you how what we've learned from you personally helped us through Hurricane Harvey.
